About new immigrants

Juz finished chemistry paper today and its like a load off my back. I think I have enough of the bad dreams about chemistry qns already. Maths and econs coming up but at least I get to have 1 day of rest.

I was watching ' Come on lets shoot', a talkshow with my father on Wednesday earlier this week, then we started to have a mini discussion ourselves in our living room. My father brought up this viewpoint that I think is quite true. He said the inflow of new immigrants does not solve our aging population problem because they are not bringing in babies that we need. These new immigrants are mostly in their 20's and above and having more of these people will only increase our burden on the shrinking younger generation. I argued that these people could actually bring more jobs for us but if you like at statistics, only half of the new jobs goes to local, so these people could bring in more income but could also create a larger outflow of income. To make us more cosmopolitan would make people unsure of their own roots and identity, there may be no such thing as ' Singapore, my homeland' in the future and only ' Singapore, my source of income' If there exist only a cost and benefit relationship between Singapore and the new immigrants, it may create the idea that Singapore is just a place to earn more money and when the economic situation worsen, many may leave us.

Even now, many of my Jc friends are talking about migrating or studying overseas, even at bus stops, I hear aunties talking about their grandchildren going overseas to states or UK to study and here I am stuck here. Not that I would also like to do so but just feeling sad that the new generation actually can't wait to leave the country and who knows how many of my friends would still be living here a few years from now. I guess its time to learn to be more independent (like binomial distribution), who knows I may one day migrate to China like many of my classmates think I would like to go. haha.

I don't really know if Singapore can continue to lead the region in the next 50 years and I am actually quite worried about my job prospects. The future is bleak but I could only wish that all my worries will not come true. U may think I am crazy and overly pessimistic but I just believe that we should not look at things on the surface and believe whatever we are told.
