Volunteering for Singapore!
Just came back from my first day of volunteering work at National Sailing Centre as a Media Relations Assistant for Asian Youth Games. I would say its a fun EATING experience there. haha. I think National Sailing Centre is a bit out of the way for most Singaporeans, so we didn't really have any crowd there. I was in the media room most of the time helping myself to drinks and food.:P The good thing is, I get to join in this event. Although we kinda do nothing there, except look at the sea and attend to some media enquiries but its great to be part of the games. Who knows, maybe the next time Singapore get to host AYG, I will an old lady already.
Did I mention that I will be an Ambassador for APEC meeting coming up this month too? I am proud to be one! Initially thought I will get to know some insights for this important Economic Conference by being an Ambassador but when I went for the Training last Friday, I was told I will be stationed at Changi Airport and not at the Conference venue itself. Was a bit disapointed at first, but realized the role at Airport is very challenging as well. We have to be a Singapore-Know-All person. Knowing where to advice the visitors to go, to shop, to eat. How to go Pulau Ubin, KUsu Island and Stuff. I am trying very hard to memorise the details from the guidebook given about Singapore attractions, food and .... so that I know how to answer questions from the delegates when they arrive. However, the problem is... the guidebook is in English only. So I think I have to do my own translation to Chinese for the Chinese delegates and their families. For the other countries, I pray hard that they speak English.
I just told my mum that I may be stationed inside the transit area during that few days and its going to be a bit dangerous because those visitors haven't gone through the temperature taking area yet. She told me not to come home if I feel unwell. Quarantine myself at my sister's house with her 6 cats for the time being first since my sister will be away in Japan during that period. Its better to spread to cats than humans. Should I call the SPCA first?
Just to share some interesting fact that the STB people told us.
1.The Orchard road district is now divided in FLOWER, FOREST & FRUITS areas. Take a walk down the 2.2km Orchard Road starting from Orchard Shopping Centre --> Plaza Singapura and you will know what I mean :)
2.It will take at least 15days for a tourist to finish touring all attractions in Singapore. SO the next time your friend from overseas ask for your advice, tell them to stay a few more days, it will do Singapore GDP good :) The people in tourism industry will thank you :)
